Mike Goodrich enters his 16th season as head coach of the Nova Southeastern University women’s soccer team. As the winningest coach in program history with a 121-105-22 record, Goodrich has led NSU to progressive success on and off the pitch. Under Goodrich’s guidance, the Sharks have made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. Meanwhile, off the field, NSU has garnered National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award honors in both 2007 and 2008.

The 2013 season turned out to be an up-and-down season for Goodrich and the Sharks. NSU stormed out to a 4-1 record, including a win over No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne, 2-1, in overtime. Despite winning just one match after the hot start, the team was just three minutes away from making the SSC tournament. The team needed a win in their final match of the season against Florida Southern, however, FSC tied the match with three minutes left, then again five minutes into overtime to steal the sixth seed in the tournament from the Sharks. The team finished the season 5-10-2, 1-6-1 SSC.

In 2012, with 21 underclassmen on the roster, the Sharks finished fourth in the SSC with a 4-8-3 overall record and  3-3-2 in the conference. The Sharks hosted the opening round of the SSC tournament, before falling short to Eckerd, 1-0.

In the 2011 season, the Sharks finished with a 9-5-2 overall record and fell short in the SCC tournament, falling to No. 24 Florida Tech, 1-0.

Although carrying 17 newcomers and 14 freshman, Goodrich was able to capture a SSC regular season co-championship in 2010. The Sharks opened with a rocky 1-3-0 start before kicking into high gear in the beginning of conference play and the middle of the season. The Sharks went on an eight game unbeaten streak (7-0-1), knocking off No. 21 Florida Tech and tying No. 4 Rollins during the streak. The Sharks finished out the season 1-2-0, taking down Lynn, but falling at No. 15 Florida Southern and Saint Leo. The team tabbed four SSC Players of the Week and a ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District team member in Lindsey Nowland.

In 2009, Goodrich fielded 13 newcomers, nine of which were freshman. The team got off to a firey 4-1-0 start before dropping three straight games. The Sharks then responded with a three game winning streak, posting a thrilling 3-2 win over Tampa. NSU played its biggest game of the year against No. 9 Rollins, where they tied the Tars 2-2 in double overtime. The 2009 team inked three SSC Players of the Week, a first team All-SSC member and an ESPN the Magizine Academic All-District 3 Team member. The Sharks earned a 3.12 GPA, receiving the NSCAA Team Academic Award, handed out to only 332 teams across the nation.

NSU opened the 2008 season with an eight-game unbeaten streak, going 5-0-3 en route to finishing the season with an 8-5-3 record. It marked the second time in three years in which the Sharks did not suffer a loss through the first eight games. Individually, Stephanie Quinones and Shurell Burton both received NSCAA Second-Team and Third-Team All-Region honors, respectively. Quinones was also a Daktronics Second-Team All-Region and a Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference honoree. Off the field, both Quinones and Hayley Oligane received praise for their efforts in the classroom. Quinones was a ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-District selection. Oligane received NSU’s most prestigious honor among the graduating class as she was named the 2009 James Farquhar Award.

The 2007 Sharks were a deep side that featured SSC Freshman of the Year Lauren Prow, First Team All-SSC defender Jennifer Turner and two NSCAA All-Americans, Quinones and Burton. Behind an 11-4-2 record for the second-straight season, NSU made its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

In 2006, the Sharks had a banner year, including their first NCAA tournament appearance and an 11-4-2 showing. NSU got breakout performances from All-SSC honorees Quinones, Burton, Oligane and Lauren Huffman. The Sharks also had their first season in which they were undefeated at the NSU Soccer Complex. Later that year, Quinones became NSU’s first-ever women’s soccer All-American.

In 2005, the Sharks, under Goodrich’s direction, compiled a 5-7-1 record and finished fifth in the SSC. The 2005 squad featured All-Conference performers Quinones, Burton and Jahmila Williams. The trio would be the first All-SSC honorees in the program’s history. The 2005 edition of the Sharks included five freshmen starters.

In 2004, Goodrich and his team posted an 6-8-1 record. Among the highlights of the 2004 campaign was the first-ever victory for an NSU team in a SSC Tournament game, as the Knights knocked off nationally-ranked Lynn 2-1 on the road in the SSC quarterfinals. NSU lost to eventual SSC Tournament Champion Tampa in the semifinals, but proved it can compete with the best in the SSC.

The 2002 season saw the Knights break a number of program records en route to a 13-5 record in the program’s first year playing in NCAA Division II. The Knights set school records for fewest losses, consecutive home wins (6), home wins in a season (8) and fewest goals allowed in a season (22). The Knights also received National Poll votes in the NCAA. NSU finished the 2002 season ranked 5th in the NCAA Division II South Region.

A strong advocate of community involvement, Goodrich has developed and produced numerous camps and clinics for children in South Florida. Additionally, he is the co-founder and president of the Frankie Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the purchase and placement of AEDs in area parks and recreation facilities.

Goodrich, a South Florida resident for much of his life, earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Stetson in 1986.

Goodrich resides in Coral Springs, Fla. with his wife, Joan, and children Regina and Patrick.
