FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team hosted a free baseball clinic at Rotary Park on Monday, Jan. 24. Ten players took part in the event organized by assistant coach Cliff Terracuso. The Sharks divided into different skill groups giving the children a closer one-on-one fundamental lesson of baseball techniques.
NSU’s
Alex Marrero (So., Miami, Fla.) gave a batting demonstration alongside head coach Greg Brown. Teaching the children the importance of seeing the pitch, he let them in on insights of drills his players use to master this skill. They eagerly participated by asking questions and shadowing the Sharks every move. With other players such as
Nick Avila (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Ralph Pena (So., Miami, Fla.), and
Scott Woodrey (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) giving demonstrations on fielding, pitching, and throwing, the clinic was very successful.
“It’s great for the boys to be looked up to as role models” said Brown. As players were asked to give autographs and take pictures after the event.
Brown commented on the importance of his athletes being involved in community service events stating, “It’s community outreach and letting them know what our University stands for. Being familiar with their roots and where they come from, as well as the gratification that they feel from giving to the community.”
“The [Sharks] loved the experience and were so grateful they were able to be a part of the event” said Terracuso. He received multiple texts from his players after the event expressing their excitement.
The Sharks already have other events scheduled for this Wednesday, Jan. 26 for the Cooper City Optimist Coach’s Clinic and on Thursday, Jan. 27 for the Cooper City Optimist Youth Clinic. With expectations high, the Sharks are looking to host an even larger group of young athletes.
