FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2011 was enshrined in a gala ceremony on Tuesday evening at the Don Taft University Center.

The invitation-only event featured the induction of NSU’s chancellor and three former student-athletes. Softball player Cheryl Bond, men’s soccer player Matthew Parry, women’s rower/volleyball player Jennifer Rembe, and NSU’s chancellor and former president Ray Ferrero, Jr. were named as the fifth NSU Athletics Hall of Fame Class.

Tony Segreto, retired NBC6 News Anchor, was the master of ceremonies at the event which drew over 200 attendees. The evening kicked off with a cocktail hour in the club room, overlooking the NSU Arena’s basketball and volleyball court. Dinner followed on the south auxiliary court followed by the annual ceremony.

Members of the hall of fame class bestowed each 2011 inductee with a hall of fame jacket, ring, and plaque to commemorate their enshrinement.

"The class of 2011 helped establish the tradition of NSU athletics and the high level of athletic achievement that continues today," said Michael Mominey, NSU Director of Athletics. "They exemplified the commitment, drive and character that are necessary to succeed on the field of play and in life. We welcome the new class into the hall of fame."

The following is the Class of 2011:

Cheryl Bond, Softball 1998-2001
Bond made her mark at NSU during the softball program’s twilight years competing in the Florida Sun Conference. Today, Bond is ranked among the program’s greatest sluggers and is still the program’s most decorated catcher.

Bond was a consistent force for the Knights, batting .351 over a three-year career. She ended her stint with NSU with a .546 slugging percentage which at the time sat atop the record book for all players with more than 400 at bats. Bond finished her career with 47 doubles, 11 home runs and 123 RBI. Bond broke out in her freshman season in 1999, earning All-Florida Sun Conference honors and guiding her team to the NAIA National Tournament. She had her best season in 2000 when she hit a single-season record 25 doubles and earned NFCA All-American and Diamond Sports’ Catcher of the Year honors.

Bond played her last season in 2001 where she received her second All-American honor after combining for 56 runs and RBI. The Broward County native was a star in the classroom as she received Scholar All-American honors as a psychology major in her final season.

She graduated from NSU with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Master’s degree in speech language pathology. She is currently a clinical coordinator of therapy services for Kindred Healthcare at Mission Regional Medical Center. She resides in Edinburg, Texas with her husband, Norborto Lopez, a former NSU baseball player and their 2-year old son, Niko.

Ray Ferrero, Jr., President 1998-2009/Chancellor 2010-2011
Ray Ferrero, Jr. served as the fifth president of Nova Southeastern University from January of 1998 to December of 2009, before being named chancellor in January of 2010.

He began his time with NSU in 1984 and served as chairman of the board of trustees for six years. One of his most notable accomplishments was playing a major role in the merger between Nova and Southeastern University, setting the groundwork for the largest independent university in the southeast and the seventh largest in the country.

During his 12-year presidency, Ferrero oversaw the athletic department as it was granted full membership in the NCAA Division II and accepted into in the Sunshine State Conference. The Sharks have since captured six National Championships and 14 Sunshine State Conference Championships, including three consecutive women’s golf NCAA Division II National Championships.

Additionally, women’s sports offerings have doubled during his tenure. Ferrero has also overseen a transformation of NSU’s main campus. This includes the construction of the Don Taft University Center home to the Sharks’ volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams, the NSU Soccer Complex, NSU Aquatic Center, a student-athlete academic services center, and a private workout facility for student-athletes.

In addition, he is largely responsible for the creation of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center. The library is the nation’s only joint-use facility agreement between a private university and a county government entity. Other additions to the campus include the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center Village, the Carl DeSantis Building, and The Commons Residence Hall. Ferrero has expanded the university’s presence in Florida and beyond. The school now has Student Educational Centers in every major Florida city east of Tallahassee, making NSU more prevalent than ever.

Matthew Parry, Men’s Soccer 2002-2005
Parry is one of the most decorated athletes in NSU men’s soccer history and was one of the marquee student-athletes when the athletic department transitioned into the NCAA. Parry is the all-time career leader with 28 assists and is the program’s first All-American in the NCAA era. Parry finished his career in the top-10 in points with 72 on 22 goals and 28 assists. He is the second player in program history to have over 25 assists and 20 goals. Parry also collected five game-winning goals in his career with at least one in every season.

Parry earned his NCAA All-American award in 2004 when he totaled a career-high 24 points on nine goals and six assists. He was honored that year with the STUEY award for Male Athlete of the Year. Parry broke out the year before, earning All-Region honors for his career-high 10-assist season. The assist total ranked second all-time by season’s end. Parry finished his career earning All-Sunshine State Conference and All-South Region awards his senior year.

Parry graduated from NSU with a Bachelor’s degree in sports and wellness studies. Immediately after his playing career, he became the assistant coach for the NSU men’s soccer team. He went on to earn his Masters degree in business administration and is currently pursuing his Doctoral degree in educational leadership. He resides in Plantation.

Jennifer Rembe, Rowing/Volleyball 1999-2004
Starting her collegiate career at NSU as a volleyball player, Rembe took an unprecedented route to becoming an All-American. Playing four seasons of volleyball, she collected 359 career kills including a career-high 163 her senior season in 2003.

With one year of athletic eligibility left, Rembe joined NSU’s first-year rowing program in 2004 and became the program’s first-ever All-American. After wrapping up her volleyball career, Rembe was approached by head rowing Coach John Gartin about joining the team despite having no rowing experience. She took to the water and flourished, earning CRCA All-American and Scholar All-American honors in her first and only season. Rembe went on to help guide the first-year program to an appearance in the NCAA Division II national championship.

Despite joining the team as a complete newcomer to the sport, Rembe helped lay the groundwork for a rowing program that has since collected four Sunshine State Conference Championships and made seven NCAA Championship appearances in eight seasons.

She graduated from NSU with a Bachelor’s degree in marine biology. She currently resides in Sterling, Colorado, and serves as lieutenant in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
