NSU WEEKEND RECAP: Women's Cross Country One Spot Shy of a SSC Title

With 17 athletic teams on campus, the Nova Southeastern Sharks are always competing at the highest level. If you did not get a chance to follow your favorite teams this weekend, here is what you missed:

CROSS COUNTRY
The men's and women’s cross country teams finish third and second overall, respectively, this weekend in the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Championships hosted by Nova Southeastern. Tampa came away with both the men’s and women’s championships.

Kevin Meagher (Jr., Mansfield, Mass.), Omar Hernandez (So., Rio Pic, Ariz.), Alexandria Palm (So., Winnebago, Ill.) and Taylor Stokes (So., Advance, N.C.) each earned a spot on the All-Championship team for their top-10 performances this past weekend.

VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team went 1-1 over the weekend, picking up a win over Central Oklahoma Friday, on "Take a Bite Out of Cancer" night at NSU Arena.

Against the Bronchos, the Sharks ratcheted up the defense, blocking 12 attacks in the 3-1 victory. Molly Sigerich (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill.) led the way with one solo block and five blocking assists for NSU. Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) finished the match with a team-high 14 kills, while Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.) was one back with 13, hitting at a .370 clip. Paige Boivin (Jr., Plainfield,Ill.) led all student-athletes with 27 digs in the match, while Jordan Pappas (Jr., Naperville, Ill.) added 44 assists on 48 Sharks kills.

The Sharks fell Saturday to SSC rival Eckerd, 3-0, but tallied nine more blocks. Sigerich again provided the defense for the Sharks, recording two solo blocks and two blocking assists.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Despite losing 2-0 to Tampa, the women’s soccer team has secured a bid for the SSC tournament.

The Sharks currently reside in fourth-place in the SSC standings with 11 conference points. Fifth and sixth-place teams Florida Tech and Lynn have 10 and nine SSC points, respectively. Both teams have one SSC match remaining on their schedule.

Prior to the game against Tampa the Sharks honored the careers of five seniors for senior day. Seniors recognized include; Chrissy Hy (Weston, Fla.), Lindsey Nowland (Cape Coral, Fla.), Rachael Reid (Indianapolis, Ind.), Sarah Wareham (Davie, Fla.) and Shanoska Young (Kingston, Jamaica).

MEN’S SOCCER
The men’s soccer team competed in its final SSC match of the season as they lost to Tampa at the NSU Soccer Complex Saturday night, 2-1.

Seniors Alvin Quaye (West Ham, England) and Juan Rivera (Miami, Fla.) were honored prior to the match during senior day festivities. The five-year players both connected on assists to Simon Nett (So., Grimstad, Norway), who scored his first career goal. The score came off a corner kick in the 61st minute when Rivera played the ball into the box, off of Quaye and straight to Nett who chipped it in.

The match came down to a penalty kick that Tampa scored on in the 54th minuteHalil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) took his team’s final shot-on-goal within the last 30 seconds of the match. The Sharks will end their season this Wednesday on the road against Palm Beach Atlantic at 3 p.m.
