FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Erin Black (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) earned Nova Southeastern’s first NCAA Automatic Qualifying time of the season in the 500-yard freestyle as the NSU swimming and diving teams maintained success on day three of the second annual Shark Invitational Sunday at the NSU Aquatic Center.

Black obliterated the previous team record in the 500-free by 11 seconds and beat the A-cut time by almost two seconds. She is now guaranteed a spot in the NCAA National Championship in Mansfield, Texas from March 14-17.

The No. 14 women’s team stayed in second place after day three and stand 188 points behind No. 9 Tampa. The No. 9 men dropped to third place, 25.5 points behind No. 12 Florida Southern and 180 points behind No. 11 Tampa.

The Sharks started the preliminaries with one of their strongest performances in the women’s 500-freestyle. Black led the way by placing fourth in the preliminary, setting the stage for her dramatic finals win. NSU made up almost half the field as Jessica Rocheleau (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.), Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Devan Martin (Jr., Duluth, Ga.) all qualified for the finals.

On the men’s side, Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) was the top finals qualifier with a time of 4:35.10. Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) joined him in the final with the third best preliminary time of 4:37.89.

Martin went back-to-back as she also qualified for the women’s 100-yard backstroke alongside teammates Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.) and Kelli Swanson (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.). In the men’s 100-backstroke, Josh Davis (So., Huron, S.D.) was the team’s lone finals qualifier with a B-cut time of 51.88.

Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland) took the top finals spot in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke with a B-cut time of 1:04.78. Ashley Bransford’s (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba) time of 1:07.50 was strong enough to put her in the finals alongside Jamborska. In the men’s 100-backstroke, Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) earned a B-cut time of 65.65 and joined Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.) in the final.

Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England) qualified for the final in the 200-yard butterfly alongside fellow Sharks Lawrenz and Nichole Schultz (So., Roseville, Calif.). On the men’s side, Grundstrom finished with a B-cut time of 1:52.59, third among all preliminary times.

After Black started the finals off with a record breaking performance, Nordstrand nearly stole her thunder by coming within a second of an A-cut time in the men’s 500-freestyle. He won the race with a time of 4:29.50, which was also close to the program record set by Jorge Ospina last season.

Aranda was the Sharks’ top performer in the women’s 100-backstroke with a time of 59.91, good for sixth place. In the men’s version, Davis represented his team well as the only Shark. He finished with a B-cut time of 51.34.

In the women’s 100-breaststroke, Jamborska raced in one of the closest finishes of the night. Her time of 1:04.71 claimed second place as she was beaten by two tenths of a second. Hornikel claimed third place in the men’s 100-breaststroke, improving on his B-cut time by clocking in at 56:44.

Chapple stepped up in the women’s 200-butterfly and added on to her impressive freshman campaign. Chapple broke her own record by two seconds, claiming third with a B-cut time of 2:05.30. She was a half of a second behind first place.

The night was capped off with the 800-yard freestyle relay, an event in which both the men and women entered as the only teams with a B-cut time. The women placed second in their race, breaking the program record by almost 10 seconds with a time of 7:37.23. On the men’s side, the Sharks claimed third place with a time of 6:47.67.

The Sharks will conclude the Shark Invitational Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. at the NSU Aquatic Center.
