Women’s Basketball and Special Olympics Team Up for Great Experience

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team is currently in the midst of a two week break from NCAA competition, but that does not mean they have been completely removed from basketball action. This past weekend the Sharks spent a great deal of time and energy volunteering with the Broward County Special Olympics at the Don Taft University Center.

“Our women’s basketball team volunteered for the Special Olympics of Broward County this past weekend at a basketball tournament held at NSU.  Our players and coaches conducted skill sessions, assisted in skill competitions, and helped with operations during the tournament games,” remarked head coach LeAnn Freeland about her team’s involvement in the event.

“Our players were impressed by the Special Olympian’s positive attitudes, display of sportsmanship, and enthusiasm to play basketball.  There were a lot of high fives given and received during the tournament by our players and the tournament participants.  The volunteer opportunity was a very positive experience for our players and we plan to offer more of our time to such a great organization.”

The Sharks have begun Freeland’s tenure as head coach with a 7-3 record, including an upset No. 24 Shaw, 69-54, Dec. 13. NSU will next take the court Dec. 30 in Valdosta Georgia, its final non-conference matchup of the season.
