TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

WINTER PARK, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern tennis team got off to a great start Friday before rain stopped play at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational, hosted by Rollins.

Before the rain stopped action, the Sharks rolled through the first round of doubles play, going 3-1. In Flight A, the freshman duo of Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Linda Kornienko (Fort Myers, Fla.) moved into the second round by beating NCAA Division-I Bethune Cookman’s Kajiwara/Chinchilla, 8-3.

Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) and Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) also picked up a victory, taking down another BC squad of Peterson-Paul/Dimitrova, 8-3. Alongside Cote and Rizzolo in the B-Draw was Bianca Roberts (So., Fort Walden Beach, Fla.) and Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico), who defeated Doerfler/Copeland of Florida Southern, 8-6.

The Sharks only loss came in the A flight, as Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) fell to Perez/Rink of perennial powerhouse Armstrong Atlantic State, 8-1. Johansson and Rizzolo were the only Shark to finish singles play. Johansson lost to D-I Central Florida’s Jenna Doerfler, 6-2, 6-2. Rizzolo nearly sent her match to a third set against Elissa DeCampli, but was defeated, 6-2, 4-6 (6).
