Women’s Basketball Locks In Three Recruits for 2012-13

The Sharks add three to 2012-13 recruiting class.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Nova Southeastern women’s basketball coach LeAnn Freeland has announced the signing of three student-athletes for 2012-13 season. The Sharks will welcome Molly Blomer, Taylor Buie and Alexis Murphy to campus and the hardwood next fall.

Blomer will make her way to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. via Lakota East HS in Liberty Township, Ohio. Lakota East played to a 13-8 record this season with the help of 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game from Blomer. Also a stellar free throw shooter, she converted on 89 percent of her attempts this season and leaves Lakota East with the highest career free throw percentage and as the top rebounder in school history.

The First-Team All-GMAC selection as a senior tallied a season-high 25 points against Rogers and pulled down 12 rebounds versus Fairfield. Blomer has also been tabbed to the District 15 Seniors First-Team, First-Team All-Area and was an Associated Press All-Southwest District Honorable Mention recipient.

“Molly is a very good shooter and a versatile player on both ends of the floor,” said Freeland of the 5-11 forward. “She has a winning spirit and is a natural leader, as evident by being named a three-time team captain at a very well-respected program in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Her high basketball IQ and her ability to be coached are two valuable attributes she will be bringing to our program.”

Buie will travel the furthest distance to join the Sharks, coming from Puyallup, Wash. where she played for Emerald Ridge HS. Buie contributed 25.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.5 apg and 3.3 steals per game to an Emerald Ridge squad that went 19-6 this season. Her best game this season came when she dropped 46 points in a great win over state power Federal Way. She leaves Emerald Ridge as the school's leader in scoring (1,457 points), assists (300) and steals (200). Buie averaged 20 ppg over her three-year at Emerald Ridge.

The three-time All-SPSL South First-Team selection and SPSL South co-MVP this season was ranked as the 50th best point guard in the nation by ESPN.com. Buie was also selected as a Gatorade National Player of the Year nominee.

On the state level, Buie was selected to the Associated Press Class 4A All-State First-Team, as well as The News Tribune’s All-Classifications Second-Team for the state of Washington.

“Taylor is an exceptional point guard and overall player,” said Freeland of the 5-5 guard. “She is a fierce competitor with an unshakeable demeanor on the court. Because of her ability to create her own shot and her body control around the basket, she will be tough to defend. We are excited to sign such a highly-touted recruit at the national level straight out of high school.”

Also from the Buckeye State, Alexis Murphy from Carlisle HS will be joining the Sharks in 2012-13. Murphy helped Carlisle to an outstanding 19-3 record, averaging 18.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.2 apg and three spg. Murphy concludes her high school career as the all-time leader in scoring and steals.

A four-time All-SWBL First-Team member, Murphy played her way to SWBL and District 15 Player of the Year honors as a senior. Murphy was also selected to the Southwest Ohio First-Team on her way to garnering All-Ohio Special Mention accolades.

“Alexis can play a variety of positions, but mainly played point guard in high school,” commented Freeland on the 5-9 guard. “She can score in a variety of ways and is a good on-the-ball defender. Alexis is a determined individual with a true passion for basketball. Throughout the recruiting process, I have been impressed by her ambition, heart, and desire to be challenged. With her leadership and vision, she helped change the direction of her high school program and I anticipate she will have the same positive effect on our program at NSU.”

The trio of out-of-state athletes will join Khadejra Young, a senior at Nova High School in Davie, Fla., who signed with the Sharks during the early signing period back in the fall. The four student-athletes will join a NSU squad that racked up 17 wins this season, the most since the 2007-08 campaign, during Freeland’s first season at the helm of the Sharks’ women’s basketball program.
