No. 3 Rowing Headed to the NCAA Championships

The Sharks will compete in the NCAA Championships May 25-27 in West Windsor, N.J.

COMPLETE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ROWING SCHEDULE

, Fla. The No. 3 Nova Southeastern women’s rowing team has been selected as one of six teams to compete in the NCAA Division-II Championships, as announced by the NCAA May 14. The three-day event will take place May 25-27 on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. and be co-hosted by Rider and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Sharks will be making their eighth appearance at the Championships.
 
The Sharks will be joined in West Windsor by: No. 1 Humboldt State, No. 2 Western Washington, No. 4 Mercyhurst, No. 5 Central Oklahoma (at-large) and No. 6 Barry (at-large). The Sharks's varsity eight will compete in heat one of their event at 11:15 a.m. Friday, going up against Western Washington and Central Oklahoma. Heat two will feature Humboldt State, Mercyhurst and Barry. NSU's varsity four will also compete in heat one at 12:15 p.m., going head-to-head with Mercyhurst.
 
The Sharks have performed very well throughout the spring season and are currently ranked third in the nation and first in the south region.
 
NSU’s varsity eight won the FIRA Championships and the SSC title this spring. The Sharks topped the seven-boat field at the FIRA Championships, winning by an 8.5 second margin over runner-up Emory. The varsity eight then went on to take the crown at the SSC Championships, contributing to the Sharks’ fifth conference title as a team.
 
On May 12, the Sharks’ varsity eight grabbed the silver medal at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. NSU posted a time of 7:03.91, trailing only Mercyhurst by a few seconds at the finish line.
 
The Sharks’ varsity four has been its most victorious boat this spring, having won each of its last four events. A win at the FIRA Championships helped lead the Sharks to their first All Points Trophy in program history. The varsity four then moved on to take first place at the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. April 21-22.
 
At the SSC Championships, the Sharks brought home the varsity four title by a commanding 28.8 seconds over Tampa. The Sharks’ most recent victory came May 12 at the Dad Vail Regatta, beating a field of 24 boats to win its second title in the last three years at the prestigious event in Philadelphia.
 
NSU’s varsity four won the program’s only national title May 31, 2009, topping Western Washington and Mercyhurst with a time of 7:53.64.
 
Western Washington has won the last seven national titles, dating back to 2005. Mercyhurst was the National Champion in 2004, while UC Davis won the two Championships prior to that.
