WINTER PARK, Fla. – Nova Southeastern second baseman
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) has been named Co-Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office Wednesday. He also received All-SSC First-Team honors alongside
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) and
Zachary Westcott (So., Weston, Fla.).
Asuaje becomes the second NSU baseball player to take home the Player of the Year honor and the first since Bryan Cook won the award in 2008. Asuaje has excelled in the leadoff role for NSU, hitting .414 on the season. He routinely puts himself in scoring position, with 23 doubles on the year. He is one double away from tying the single-season doubles record at NSU, set by Guillermo Munoz in 1991.
Asuaje enters the postseason with an even .500 on base percentage. He also has 28 RBI and five home runs on the season. He is the first baseball player in SSC history to win Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Asuaje earns this year’s honor alongside Lynn’s Anthony Boza.
Regoli made his own case for Player of the Year in 2012 and took home All-SSC First-Team honors. He lead all outfielders in the SSC in voting, collecting 11 out of 18 first-place votes in the conference. Regoli was an elite power hitter this season, with 16 home runs and 47 RBI. He is one of four players in team history to hit at least 16 home runs in a season. He also ranks second on the team with 10 doubles and a .352 batting average.
Westcott broke out as the Sharks’ Friday-night pitcher in 2012 and was a candidate for Pitcher of the Year. He finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and a 2.36 ERA. He has accumulated 48 strikeouts on the season while walking only 14 batters over 84 innings pitched. Westcott was the fastest pitcher in the conference to reach eight wins this season.
