No. 3 Rowing Claims Third at the NCAA Championships

The Sharks finished second in the varsity four and third in the varsity eight.

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. –
The No. 3 Nova Southeastern rowing team completed competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships Sunday morning, finishing third in the team standings. Racing on calm water on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., the Sharks’ varsity four placed second, while the varsity eight took third in a very close Grand Final. No. 2 Humboldt State won both races to win the Division-II national title.
 
Racing began Sunday morning with the varsity four Grand Final between NSU, Humboldt State and No. 1 Western Washington. Through the first 500 meters, Humboldt State created a one-half boat length advantage on NSU. At the half-way point, Humboldt State's lead increased to a full boat length, while NSU continued to lead WWU by about one-half of a length.
 
Humboldt State continued to extend its lead over the final 500 meters, creating about one boat length of open water space over NSU. At the finish, Humboldt State posted a time of 7:42.96 for the victory. The Sharks crossed the finish line just under 10 seconds after in a time of 7:51.37 to take second place. WWU followed closely in third with a time of 7:53.93.
 
The Sharks’ varsity four boat was comprised of: coxswain Heather Clayton (Sr., Mullica Township, N.J.), Caitlin Mooney (So., Centerville, Mass.), Jessica Sutter (Sr., Key Largo, Fla.), Amanda Craig (Fr., Berlin, N.J.),  and Dayna Triana (So., Homosassa, Fla.).
 
After the varsity eight Petite Final, in which No. 5 Central Oklahoma topped No. 8 Barry, the varsity eight Grand Final between NSU, WWU, Humboldt State and No. 4 Mercyhurst got underway.
 
Following a restart, WWU was able to get out of the gate quickly and establish a five-seat lead on the Sharks 500 meters into racing. With 1,000-meters in the books, Humboldt State overtook NSU for second by two seats, while WWU maintained a six-seat advantage in first.
 
The WWU lead would diminish late in the race as Humboldt State and NSU charged forward in the final 500 meters. With under 250 meters of racing left, Humboldt State was able to erase the WWU lead and take over the top spot. At the finish line it would Humboldt State in first with a time of 6:48.84, while WWU was just able to hold off NSU for second with a time of 6:50.45. The Sharks finished third with a finishing mark of 6:51.89.
 
The Sharks’ varsity eight featured: coxswain Caroline Kelly (So., Seaville, N.J.), Taylor Van Horn (So., Cape Coral, Fla.), Lauren Boudreau (Jr., Waterford, N.Y.), Kelly Scott (Fr., Hobe Sound, Fla.), Victoria Ciccone (So., Brigantine, N.J.),  Megan O'Donnell (Fr., Lake Worth, Fla.), Remi McClellan (Fr., Mullica, N.J.), Camille Evans (Fr. Orlando, Fla.) and Stephanie Hauck (So., Somers Point, N.J.).
 
With wins in the varsity four and eight races, Humboldt State accumulated 20 points to become the 2012 NCAA D-II National Champions. WWU, who won the previous seven national titles, claimed second with 13 points, just one ahead of the Sharks.
