Baseball Takes Part in Circle of Friends

Dan Austin was the speaker at the event.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Members of the Nova Southeastern baseball team took part in this year's Circle of Friends event on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

"The opportunity to bring our student-athletes to the Circle of Friends event and hear Dan Austin speak on the life of Hugh Alexander had a great impact on all of us in attendance," said head coach Greg Brown. "His passion as a storyteller of the game of baseball is inspiring and I think it was great for our student-athletes to connect with the history of the game. The highlight for me was the interaction our guys had with Mr. Austin before and after the event as he shared more intimate details of his passion for our game."

Austin, the speaker at the event, is a professor emeritus of business at Nova Southeastern University. He has completed two oral history projects, one for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the other celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Negro Professional Baseball League in Kansas City, Mo. Austin told stories of the life of "Uncle Hughie" and interacted with the crowd. Roberto Baroniel (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and coach Brown were each selected to come up and demonstrate in the presentation.

Austin signed books and is donating all of the proceeds back to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

The event took place on the second floor of the library gallery and had a baseball theme by serving ballpark food, as well as baseball centerpieces.
