CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams ended their time at the Sunshine State Conference Championships with both teams earning second-place finishes.
On the women's side, Tampa claimed the title with 892 points. NSU followed right behind with 867 and Florida Southern rounded out the top three with 706 points.
Lauren Chapple (So., London, England) took home the Women's Swimmer of the Meet honors. Chapple earned the award by breaking both the SSC meet record and overall conference record in two events: the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly.
The men also claimed a second-place finishing behind Florida Southern, who dominated the meet with 940 points. NSU followed behind with 780 points and Tampa rounded out the top three with 726 points.
The first event of the day was the women’s top-eight 1,650-yard freestyle.
Sara Akoubian (Jr., Run Dacula, Ga.) led the way for the Sharks as she placed third with a time of 17:12.14.
Erin Black (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and
Kelsea Smith (Sr., Edina, Minn.) placed fifth and seventh with times of 17:22.66 and 17:44.52, respectively. All the women made B-cut times.
Marie Hanft (Sr., Port Orange, Fla.) and
Rebecca Bergen (So., Winnipeg, Canada) placed ninth and 11th with times of 17:46.26, and 17:59.18, respectively.
Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) claimed his third victory of the meet, smashing the SSC meet and overall conference record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a B-cut time of 15:31.00. Following behind Nordstrand were
Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) and
Chris Norris (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.), who came in third and fourth with times of 15:48.89 and 15:52.32, respectively.
In the 200-yard backstroke,
Devan Martin (Sr., Duluth, Ga.) was the top Shark coming in sixth place with a time of 2:07.71.
Kelli Swanson (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) took seventh place with a time of 2:09.30.
Josh Davis (Jr., Huron, S.D) came in fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a B-cut time of 1:51.39.
Michael Zislin (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and
Darren Rubenchik (Jr., Ontario, Canada) placed ninth and 10th with times of 1:53.65 and 1:53.77, respectively.
The next event was the women’s 100-yard freestyle.
Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) finished fourth with a time of 51.82.
Linea Cutter (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) and
Alexandra Zatylny (Jr., Quebec, Canada) placed sixth and seventh with times of 52.32 and 53.92, respectively.
In the men’s 100-yard freestyle,
Esau Simpson (Jr., St. David’s, Grenada) swam to a seventh-place finish with a B-cut time of 45.80.
Jim Shelley (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) finished 16th with a time of 47.01.
Ashley Bransford (Jr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) claimed a victory for the Sharks in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a B-cut time of 2:17.53.
Sammy Akoubian (Jr., Run Dacula, Ga.) and
Kimba Collymore (Sr., St. James, Trindad) and came in sixth and seventh with times of 2:23.48 and 2:25.20, respectively.
The 'A' final was stacked for the Sharks in the 200-yard breaststroke, as
Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain) led the way, taking second place with a time of 2:03.09.
Patrick Hayes (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) followed behind Aldabe in third with a time of 2:04.45.
Thomas Aycart (Jr., Miami, Fla.) ,
Jonathan Key (Jr., Biltmore Lakes, N.C.) and
Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.) placed fifth, seventh, and eighth with times of 2:06.63, 2:07.22 and 2:07.79, respectively.
Josh Anderson (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) rounded out the event by placing 12th with a time of 2:10.74.
In the women’s 200-yard butterfly, Chapple out-touched Rollins stand out Audrey Kula, with a B-cut time of 2:02.74 to claim her second victory of the meet. Chapple broke her own SSC meet record and the overall SSC record.
Emma Lawrenz (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Miranda Schumes (Fr., Bloomington, Ind.) placed fifth and sixth with B-cut times of 2:07.04 and 2:07.55, respectively.
Kathleen Bowman (Fr., Iowa City, Iowa) rounded out the final finishing eighth with a time of 2:10.53.
Santiago Pombo (So., Bogota, Columbia) was the top Shark in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.14.
John Michael Hayes (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) followed Pombo by placing seventh with a time of 1:54.12, while Rubenchik placed 12th with a time of 1:57.88 .
Some Sharks will be traveling to Birmingham, Alabama for the Division II NCAA Championships on March 6. These individuals will be determined later.
