Women’s Soccer and Volleyball Volunteer At The Third Annual Walk For Wishes

The 5k Walk/Run was initiated by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA- Women’s Soccer and Volleyball volunteered their time and took part in the third annual Walk For Wishes, a 5K walk/run that raises funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation (NCAA Division II charity) The 5K walk/run took place at Markham Park in Weston, Fla., on Feb. 4.

The 5k walk/run was initiated by the SAAC. The student-athletes volunteered their time, registering participants, handing out water to the participants, handing out medals and much more.

“We arrived at around 6:45 a.m. and began checking walkers in at 7:30 a.m.,” said women’s soccer student-athlete Kat Fleming (Jr., Miami, Fla.). “We also set up the barrels of water and the breakfast buffet. As the runners/walker crossed the finish line, we passed out waters and mini cliff bars. A few of the girls handed out the medals to the top times and then we helped clean up. We stayed until around 11a.m. It was an amazing event that granted 30 kids their wishes! It was awesome".

“Volunteering with Make-A-Wish interns and workers, along with my teammate Destiny, was a great experience,” said volleyball student-athlete Samantha High (Jr., Naples, Fla.). ”The people were so excited to be there and really shared the same goal to encourage people through the 5K. The event was a success and I would volunteer with Make-A-Wish at other events.”

There were more than 1,200 participants representing businesses, organizations, hospitals, religious groups and families running or walking in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation mission. Numerous wish kids were on hand at the event, showing their strength and joy. During the Broward County event’s history, more than $160,000 has been raised, enough to grant the wishes of 32 children.

Since 1983, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida has granted more than 8,000 wishes to children who have life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. The nonprofit organization serves families in Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Martin, Broward, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lee, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Okeechobee counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It receives no federal or state funding and raises money to grant wishes through corporate sponsorships, special events, foundation grants and individual contributions. The Southern Florida chapter grants a wish every 16 hours, every day of the year, at an average cost of $5,000.
