FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern alumnus Juan Gonzalez has signed a professional contract to play for the North America Soccer League’s New York Cosmos, as announced by the Cosmos this week.
“Juan is a versatile defender who can help solidify the depth we plan to have on our team,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He’s a hard-worker that I expect will grow well with the Cosmos.”
Gonzalez signed after performing well at the NASL combine. Gonzalez joins a prestigious club that has been the home of former superstars such as Pel? and Franz Beckenbauer. He will also play in the same league that Aly Hassan played in for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers before transferring to Bolivia’s first division.
Gonzalez was an impact defender during all four years of his time at NSU. He played in at least 15 games for four straight seasons and logged a total of 4156 minutes. He scored 10 goals in his career, including a career-high six as a sophomore in 2008.
Gonzalez will join the Cosmos for the 2013 season, which is set to begin on Aug. 3 at home against the Strikers at the James M. Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University. Gonzalez will return to South Florida on Sept. 21 to play the Strikers again at Lockhart Stadium.
