No. 17 Tennis Dropped by Rutgers, 8-1

NSU loses to NCAA Division I opponent after taking a week off.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The No. 17 Nova Southeastern tennis team (5-7) returned from a week off in a loss to the NCAA Division I Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-5), 8-1, Monday at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Sharks got their loan win in doubles play in the second draw. Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) pushed through a grueling two-hour match to beat Lindsey Kayati and Mariam Zein, 8-6. The sophomore duo is now 4-1 on the season.

The Sharks took two very close losses in doubles play. In the top flight, Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Berlin, Germany) and Austin Lavallii  (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) lost to Vanessa Petrini and Gina Li, 8-5. The third draw featured the closest match of the day, as Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) and Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) lost to Stefania Balasa and Lindsey Balsamo, 9-7.

The rest of the day was rough for NSU, as the Sharks lost every singles match. At the top, Kierberg lost to Petrini, 6-0, 6-2. In the second seed, Li won the first set, 6-0, over Johansson before the Australian made it a close second set, 6-4. Kayati got revenge for her doubles loss against Cote in the third flight, 6-3, 6-3.

In the fourth draw, Balasa got the better of Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.), 6-2, 6-3. Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) played in the fifth draw and lost to Zein, 6-2, 6-1. In the final flight, Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) lost to Noor Judeh, 6-3, 6-2.

The Sharks will return to the court on Tuesday to face California ( Pa.) at home at 1 p.m.
