BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-8) returned to the win column Thursday, defeating NCAA Division I Towson (7-5) at home, 5-4.
The Sharks put money in the bank early, winning all three doubles matches to start the day. In the top draw,
Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) teamed with
Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) for the first time this year to defeat Ayana Dow and Lorena Ferrer, 8-3. The Sharks also rolled in the second flight, where sophomore duo of
Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) and
Charlotte Cote (Montreal Canada) continued their strong play. The team defeated Ariel Burke and Nani Lizana, 8-3.
The third doubles win did not come as easy, as
Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) and
Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) won against Nisha Shah and Andrea Samlin, 9-7.
The Sharks earned the two wins in singles play they needed, with one coming in the top flight and one in the bottom draw. At the top, Johansson continued a strong week by defeating Towson’s Dow in three sets. Johansson lost the first set, 6-3, before dominating the next two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Roberts clinched the victory for the Sharks in the sixth flight, defeating Moriah Burke in straight sets. Roberts won the first, 6-4, before cruising in the second, 6-2.
Despite falling in straight matches during doubles play, Towson still made it a fight. Kornienko lost her second flight singles match to Shah, 6-3, 7-5. In the third draw,
Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) lost to Ferrer, 6-3, 6-2. Cote dropped a close set to Samlin to start the match, 7-5, before falling in the second, 6-2. In the fifth, Serdyuk dropped her match to Ariel Burke, 6-1, 6-2.
