SAN ANTONIO – On Monday night, Nova Southeastern guard
Meixandra Porter was named as the program's first-ever national first-team All-American, as announced at the NCAA Elite Eight Banquet of Champions.
Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) was recognized as one of the top 10 players in all of Division II, as she was voted onto the 2013 State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team. She was one of four players in attendance whose team has advanced to the Elite Eight.
In just two seasons at NSU, Porter has amassed 944 career points, fourth on the scoring list since the team moved to DII. She has led the team in scoring both seasons, including 17.1 points a game this year. Her 130 made 3-pointers are second all-time, and her 76 made this year is a single-season record. Porter also set the all-time school mark for points scored in a game, 36 in this season’s opener against Palm Beach Atlantic, which included a game record of nine 3-pointers as well.
She becomes the highest-ever Shark to be recognized on a national scale. Former star center Stephanie Sarosi was named All-American three times by two different entities, but Porter is the school's first first-teamer. Sarosi, in 2007-08, was awarded fourth team by DII Hoops Bulletin; the following season, Daktronics gave her second team, while DII Hoops Bulletin made her a third-team selection.
Porter and the Sharks continue their postseason run on Tuesday in the team’s Elite Eight matchup with Western Washington. Tipoff time is 7 p.m. Eastern from San Antonio.
