No. 17 Tennis Downed by Toledo, 6-3

Sharks fall to D-I team for the second time this year.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern tennis team (4-5) took a loss to the NCAA Division I Toledo Rockets (5-6), 6-3, in a neutral site match Tuesday.

The Sharks picked up two victories in singles play and one in top-flight doubles play. Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Munich, Germany) once again teamed with senior Austin Lavallii (Williamston, Mich.) to defeat Silvia Carvajal and Katelyn Nguyen, 8-3. It was the duo’s third win of the season.

The Sharks were not as fortunate in the other two doubles draws, falling in a deficit before singles action. Sophomore duo Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada) and Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) fell to Lexy Pitt and Emily Mazzola, 8-5. In the third draw, Kamryn Blackwood (Jr., Farmington, N.M.) and Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) lost to Pia Rygh and Mackenzie Bowman, 8-3.

In singles play, the Sharks picked up two more wins in the second and sixth draws. Johansson continued to pick up steam Tuesday, defeating a fresh-legged Chrissy Coffman, 6-4, 6-4. After starting the season slow, the All-American has now won three of her last four singles matches. In the sixth slot, Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) won her sixth straight match. This one did not come easy, as Pintado defeated Carvajal in a close match, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

However, NSU was not able to win two crucial three-set matches that would have given the Sharks the victory. In the top flight, Kierberg lost to Rygh, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4). It was Kierberg’s third three-setter in six career singles matches. In the fourth draw, Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) lost to Mazzola, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

In the other two singles losses, Cote fell in the third flight to Nguyen in a tight match, 6-3, 7-5. Wrapping up the day in the fifth draw was Iryna Serdyuk (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.), who lost to Pitt, 6-3, 6-4.

The Sharks will wrap up spring break play in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday against Ohio Dominican at 11:30 a.m.
