FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men and women’s track and field teams were highly recognized at the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Track and Field Championships, bringing home four postseason awards.
Most notably, the Sharks had two athletes named Co-PBC Runners of the Year on the women’s side in
Jessica Osteen (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Peri Bowman (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.).
Osteen won the 400-meter run with a NCAA automatic qualifying standard with a time of 56.07, a meet record. She also was the 400-meter hurdles champion with a time of 1:01.97 to make her second provisional qualifying time of the meet. Osteen then continued her success and participated in the 4x400 relay where the she led off for the Sharks as they won the event with a stadium record time of 3:49.13. The team included:
Monica Sapp (Fr., Miami, Fla.),
Quannisha Allen (Fr., St. Augustine, Fla.) and
Johniqua Stafford (Sr., Fort Worth, Texas). Osteen also had a successful meet in the 4x100 relay as well.
Bowman, the first NSU conference champion, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:11.69. Bowman took third in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18.21.1.Bowman took a fourth place in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:57.31.
The Sharks’ future was proved to be bright when NSU brought home both Women’s PBC Track Freshman of the Year in
Ciona Williams (Fr., Stockton, Ca.) and Men’s PBC Field Freshman of the Year in
Darren Hendricks (Fr., North Port, Fla.).
Williams claimed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.26 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.46. Hendricks made his mark in the discus throw, claiming second in the conference with a mark of 40 meters flat.
The Sharks will look to carry their momentum into the esteemed Drake Relays, beginning on April 25.
