NSU SAAC Raises Over $5,500 for Make-A-Wish

SAAC's fundraising efforts will allow NSU to help a Broward Country child in need.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised the most funds in school history for their Division II national charity, Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through Shark Nights and many athletes' participation, SAAC will be able to grant a child in need in Broward County one wish.

SAAC’s main focus was to increase fundraising efforts for the Make-A-Wish foundation by setting a goal of $5,000. This year SAAC was determined to raise $5,000 so they would have the opportunity to grant their own wish for a child in South Broward. The cost to grant a wish for a child costs around $5,000-$6,000. The SAAC was able to surpass this goal and raised $5,544.72.

“We came into this year with two major goals,” said SAAC president and rowing student athlete Lauren Boudreau. “The other goal (in addition to the $5,000) was to improve student-athletes supporting student-athletes by increasing attendance at sporting events through our Shark Night idea. We are really excited about how this has grown and I am looking forward to where they will take this next year as we look to expand by increasing general student attendance as well.”

The SAAC was able to accomplish the monetary goal through a partnership with Plantation Ford who made a generous donation on their behalf. Secondly, Director of Athletics Michael Mominey supported efforts by agreeing to donate a percentage of the proceeds made from the Shark Invitational Swim Meet. The final push of the fundraising efforts was to sell raffle tickets for an end of the year raffle. This gave SAAC the final push they needed to achieve their goals.

“I am so proud of what SAAC has accomplished and the good that will come out of everything we are working towards already for next year,” said Boudreau. “I believe in the new E-Board that we elected a few weeks ago and that they will continue to pave the way for student-athlete support, involvement and recognition in the NSU community. I am very thankful for our SAAC advisor Andrea Buenano and all of the guidance she has given us this year. Without her support and the support of her fellow staff members in the athletics department, we would not have been able to accomplish everything that we did this year.”
