WINTER PARK, Fla. – Nova Southeastern first baseman
Michael Melendez has been named Sunshine State Conference Baseball Player of the Week presented by VALIC, as announced Monday by the conference office.
Melendez (So., Miramar, Fla.) helped the Sharks stave off a sweep at the hands of No. 6 Tampa, as his two grand slams in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader pushed the team to an 11-6 victory. Melendez reached base eight times in the series, going 6-for-11 (.545) with a 1.182 slugging percentage. He also was perfect on three stolen base attempts and did not commit an error at first base.
For the season, Melendez leads NSU in slugging percentage (.614) and is second on the team in both batting average (.349) and doubles (10). He became the sixth Shark with 20 or more runs batted in with his eight-RBI performance Saturday, pushing his season total to 22.
