FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs collectively had three student-athletes honored as Capital One Academic All-Region team members, as announced by CoSIDA Thursday.
Rebecca Bergen,
Kelsea Smith and
Michael Zislin are the Sharks’ honorees and are now eligible for Academic All-American status.
These honors represent the strong academic standards of the NSU swimming and diving programs. In all three years of competition, the Sharks have had multiple athletes honored among the top academic performers in the South Region. These honors were for the award program’s at-large category, meaning the swimmers had to beat out athletes from several other sports to be recognized.
Zislin (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) received his honor for obtaining a 3.90 cumulative grade point average while studying finance. In the water, Zislin helped set the school record in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the Sunshine State Conference Championship this season. Zislin went on to earn All-America Honorable Mention in that event. He also was a strong competitor in the 200 and 100-meter freestyle and backstroke competitions.
Bergen (So., Winnipeg, Canada) has been a flawless student during her time at NSU and holds a 4.00 GPA as a biology major. In the pool, she competed at the SSC Championship as a distance swimmer in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650-meter freestyle events.
Smith (Sr., Edina, Fla.) ended her career with a cumulative GPA of 3.82 as a marketing major. In the water, Smith was a strong distance swimmer for the Sharks and set personal bests this year in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650m freestyle events at the SSC Championship. She will end her career as a NSU record holder in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
All three Sharks are eligible for recognition on the All-American team, which will be released on June 5.
