2013-14 NSU Women's Basketball Schedule
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Head coach LeAnn Freeland has released the 2013-14 Nova Southeastern women's basketball schedule, beginning in early November and featuring three different showcases at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks, coming off their Elite Eight run a year ago, start off the campaign with the NSU Tipoff Classic, featuring four teams in a two-day doubleheader. The home team will face Washburn on Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon, and then 24 hours later, match up against Stonehill. Fellow Sunshine State Conference school Barry will play those two teams, in reverse order, at 2 p.m. each day.
"Our schedule will be challenging from the start of the season," said head coach LeAnn Freeland. "We scheduled Stonehill and Washburn on opening weekend to be tested early. They were ranked No. 11 and No. 14, respectively, at the conclusion of last season."
Two weeks later, the squad will travel to Louisville, Ky., to play Kentucky State on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m., then Ferris State the following day, also at 1. The event is hosted by Bellarmine University, coached by Chancellor Dugan, who was Freeland's collegiate head coach at Southern Indiana.
Following that trip, there are two more home "classics" on the docket for the team. On Nov. 29-30, it's the NSU Thanksgiving Tourney, in which the Sharks will play Pitt-Johnstown and Flagler (who will also take on SSC squad Florida Tech), and then on Dec. 16-17, the annual Shark Invitational, against outside opponents Benedict and Shaw (again, along with Barry).
In between is the Sharks' first SSC matchup, Dec. 7, against Florida Southern at 2 p.m. The remainder of the schedule is home-and-home matchups against the remainder of the SSC schools, along with two games against Palm Beach Atlantic.
"We anticipate another tough season of basketball in the SSC," said Freeland. "The league has reloaded with a plethora of highly-touted Division I transfers. With the talented rosters across the conference, there will be a number of teams contending for the SSC title."
The final regular season home game is Feb. 26 against Florida Tech, with the last postseason tuneup on the road on March 1 against Saint Leo. The SSC Basketball Championships begin four days later, at the Silver Spurs Arena on March 5 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Should the Sharks return to the Elite Eight, it will be held this year in Erie, Penn., hosted by Gannon University. The first round there, the national quarterfinals, will begin on Tuesday, March 25, with the semifinals taking place the following day. The 2014 NCAA DII National Championship will be held on Friday, March 28.
