Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Nova Southeastern women's soccer team (3-1-0) topped the No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (2-2-0), 2-1, in a double overtime victory on Sunday afternoon.
The match needed nearly every second, when in the 107th minute of the match,
Elizabeth Haumschild (So., Clearwater, Fla.) used her head to play a ball through to
Malin Broberg (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden). Broberg, from the top-right corner of the box, dribbled past two Bear defenders on her way to the center of the 18-yard box, where she blasted a left-footed shot into the upper-left corner of the net to give the Sharks their third victory of the season.
Sandra Rolon (Jr., San Juan, P.R.), played the game of her career, finishing with five big saves, including two from point-blank range to keep the score tied right before overtime.
The first half was a defensive battle for the first 43 minutes of the match. Both teams had a couple of half opportunities before the Bears capitalized on a one-on-one chance from Leah Mullins. Mullins was calm as she dribbled past the sprawling Rolon and put the ball into the empty net, giving the Bears a 1-0 halftime lead. This was the first time the Sharks trailed prior to halftime all season.
The momentum shifted in the second half as the Sharks kept constant pressure on Lenoir-Rhyne.
Dilja Olafsdottir (Sr., Reykjavik, Iceland) tallied the equalizer for the Sharks in the 67th minute. Olafsdottir took a shot from the top of the box that found its way off the right post and dribbled just past the goal line.
Regulation would end in a 1-1 draw, as would the first overtime.
The backline of the Sharks held strong all afternoon, allowing just one goal on 19 shots to preserve the win.
NSU will travel back home to take on Lynn in a big non-conference matchup, Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the NSU Soccer Complex. The match is the second of a men's and women's doubleheader, with the men's game scheduled to start at 5 p.m., and the women at 7:30.
