FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) participated in the Miami Dolphins Special Teams 9/11 National Day of Service at Sunlife Stadium on the 11th anniversary of those events.
The Miami Dolphins Special Teams is a unique volunteer organization created to enlist and mobilize the ongoing services of the community with the Miami Dolphins staff, players and alumni. The mission of the Special Teams is to offer hands-on services to communities and families in need, to partner with existing organizations on worthwhile social, civic and charitable programs, to provide assistance at Miami Dolphins Foundation events, and to support community efforts in times of emergency.
On this day, the Special Teams honored those currently serving overseas. Participants showed their appreciation by making personalized thank you cards, sorting items and packing them into boxes to send overseas to our troops. The Dolphins mascot was also there to help and have a good time by taking pictures and dancing with the volunteers.
"It was a great experience and it was a lot of fun to work with others for such a great cause," said Krista Colburn a member of the NSU softball team and SAAC member.
Over 1,500 items were donated from NSU, 1,340 of those items came from NSU Athletics, in addition to the vast amount of items compiled from other organizations in the community. The event was successful as hundreds of volunteers showed up to the event wanting to help.
