DANIA BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern rowing and women's basketball teams participated in the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 21, spending three hours picking up garbage on the beach at John U. Lloyd State Park.
The cleanup takes place in over 104 countries around the world, and at 13 different sites in Broward County. This is the seventh year that statistics have been kept for the Broward sites, and in 2012, nearly 2,500 volunteers collected 7,171 pounds of garbage along the South Florida beaches alone.
Event organizers are still calculating the numbers for this year's cleanup, but rowing head coach Stephen Frazier-Wong estimates that the two teams and other volunteers picked up about 150 pounds of garbage on Saturday.
"We enjoyed volunteering with our fellow NSU team members, students and Broward County residents to help protect our precious coastline and natural resources," said Frazier-Wong on behalf of all of the NSU volunteers.
