NSU Swimming Wraps Up Final Day at All-Florida Invitational

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
After three days of rigorous competition, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swim teams have completed their season-opening meet at the 4th Annual Pinch-A-Penny All-Florida Invitational hosted by the University of Florida. The men's team finished fourth overall with 449 points, while the women finished seventh with 119 points.  
 
Newcomer Marco Aldabe (Fr., Alicante, Spain) continued to make waves in the pool for the Sharks, this time after posting a NCAA B-qualifying time in the men's 200-yard backstroke. He swam just over 1:52.00 in the prelims to make the A-finals and finished seventh overall with a time of 1:51.28 to earn the provisional qualifying time.
 
Darren Rubenchik (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa) also swam the 200-yard back posting a time of 2:03.14, while Emma Wahlstrom (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden) competed on the women's side posting a third-place finish in the B-final with a time of 2:10.43.
 
Earlier in the day, both Cameron Chambers (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Andrew Pittman (Fr., Plano, Texas) swam in the timed finals of the men's 1,650-yard freestyle. Chambers swam a time of 16:37.73 to finish 12th overall, while Pittman finished right behind Chambers with a time of 16:53.70.
 
In the men's 100-yard freestyle, Shane Kleinbeck (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) finished third in the B-final with a time of 47.29 seconds, cutting .02 seconds off his morning prelim time.
 
Thomas Aycart (Sr., Miami, Fla.) posted the fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke B-final and won the heat with a time of 2:11.39. Oscar Aldabe (Sr., Alincante, Spain) finished second in the B-final with a time of 2:11.75 cutting 5.09 seconds off his morning prelim time.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, Kathleen Bowman (So., Iowa City, Iowa) was the lone Shark representing NSU in the B-final and swam a time of 2:13.71, 2.73 seconds faster than her morning prelim to finish sixth in the heat. On the men's side, Andrew Moran (Fr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) and Santiago Pombo (Jr., Bogota, Columbia finished within .28 seconds of each other in the men's B-final. Moran finished third in the heat with a time of 1:57.16, while Pombo turned in a fourth-place finish at 1:57.44.
 
The day concluded with some exciting action in the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay. The NSU women's A-relay team of Alexandra Zatylny (Sr., Quebec, Canada), Sammy Akoubian (Sr., Run Dacula, Ga.), Jessica Rocheleau (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Arianna Sunyak (Jr., Naples, Fla.) finished 13th overall in the timed finals with a time of 3:45.48. On the men's side, the A-relay quartet of Kleinbeck, Magnus Lundgren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden), Florian Mehlan (Sr., Moers, Germany) and Marco Aldabe finished fifth in the time finals with a time of 3:08.81 to wrap up the three-day meet.
 
The Sharks will have a three-week layoff before they resume competition when they host a new program in the Florida Tech Panthers at the NSU Aquatic Complex on Friday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. The next day the Sharks will be on the road facing off with the Saint Leo Lions at 1 p.m.
