FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University track and field team  joined the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the cheerleading squad to lend a helping hand at the annual Sallarulo's Race, held at NSU on Saturday.
The track team, along with student-athletes from both the baseball and women's soccer teams ran alongside several Special Olympic youth runners at the event. The annual event has become a volunteer tradition for NSU student-athletes.
"I thought it was very interesting, fun and exciting," said NSU track runner Monica Sapp (Jr., Miami, Fla.). "They were very excited, pumped up and ready to win. They love interacting with athletes, so it was great for them to have us run with them."
"I volunteered with Special Olympics in high school, and it's still so much fun to interact with them," stated Elizabeth Haumschild (Jr., Riverview, Fla.). "The kid we were partnered with, Thomas, was great. He was having a lot of fun and we had a really great time."
In addition, the NSU cheerleaders were in attendance to cheer on all the participants throughout the morning. Along with Razor, the cheerleaders assisted Paul Sallarulo in kicking off the event and were there to cheer on the runners as they finished the race.

Sallarulo's Race for Champions was created by Paul, Patrick and Samantha Sallarulo to raise money for Special Olympics Florida - Broward County. It is one of several events throughout the year at NSU that aims towards raising money for the county's chapter of the Special Olympics.
