FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's golf team and head coach Amanda Brown are pleased to announce the completion of a four-person recruting class to fill out the roster for the upcoming 2014-15 season.
Newcomers Mailen Domecq Chantry, Emily-Mae Hall, and Michelle Ruiz join fellow freshman Jamie Freedman, who signed in the fall.
Mailen Domecq Chantry, Mar del plata, Argentina
Chantry had five top-10 finishes in tournaments in South America, including a high of third at Brisas de Chicureo in August of 2013 (International Tournament of Chile), shooting a 224 (76-73-75) and fourth at Copa de Oro in Mar del Plata, Argentina in January 2014 (79-76-72-74—301).
Mailen on Mailen: "I am excited to be a part of the Nova Southeastern golf program and I also think that the academic program is great. My goals to accomplish in my first year are to have a good routine of practice and play some tournaments. Moreover, I want to improve my skills in English and start to study a career. I am really excited to play tournaments as part of the NSU team!"
Coach Brown on Mailen: "Mailen has incredible natural talent and can go low and beat top-ranked junior players. She has the ability to make a big impact on our success."
Emily-Mae Hall, Nottinghamshire,
England
Hall finished ninth at the English Girls Championship (74-75-77-73—299) and was the Under 18's County Champion in 2013. She has represented England for the last three years against Scotland in the School Championships, and also competed for the Nottinghamshire ladies during County Week.
Emily-Mae on Emily-Mae: "I want to become the best golfer I can be and also be a top student, making Nova Southeastern and my parents proud of me. I feel that Nova Southeastern will definitely help me to achieve my goals with all of the outstanding facilities and helpful staff. I fell in love with the campus, got on great with Coach Brown, and feel that the whole package is perfect for me."
Coach Brown on Emily-Mae: "Emily-Mae has great experience playing at high-level tournaments and has proven she can perform on challenging courses. I'm excited to see her success this year. "
Michelle Ruiz, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Ruiz won two Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour titles in the fall of 2013, at the Caledon Country Club in August (76-79-155) and the Mystic Golf Club in September, which included a round of 75. She was recently second at a Future Collegians World Tour event at Heron Bay in February, shooting a 150 (74-76).
Michelle on Michelle: "I chose NSU for its location, size and its beautiful campus. When I walked through the campus I wasn't overwhelmed, I felt very comfortable and right at home. The location is pretty hard to beat, and the facilities that students have access to is unbelievable. I hope to accomplish being part of such a great golf program, (add) consistency and power in my game, and I'm excited for everything that is to come."
Coach Brown on Michelle: "Michelle has amazing drive and work ethic. I'm looking forward to helping her develop, and I expect her to have a positive impact on this team on and off the course."
Jamie Freedman, Plantation, Florida
Freedman is a two-time district and one-time regional individual champion, and placed as runner-up once on each level. After winning both the individual district and region titles as a senior, she was part of American Heritage's FHSAA Girls Class 2A state championship-winning squad, and tied for eighth on the leaderboard with a score of 149. Freedman was named to the Miami Herald's All-Broward First Team following her junior and season seasons, and was a four-time participant at the FHSAA Girls Golf Finals;
Jamie on Jamie: "In my next four years at NSU, I aspire to be a scholar athlete that helps our team win multiple national championships. I hope to have my teammates and coaches as friends for a lifetime. I'm proud to be a Shark!"
Coach Brown on Jamie: "Jamie is a tremendous addition to our program and will be sure to continue our success, I'm positive that with the combination of both her humility and competitive drive, she will make a huge impact on our program as a skillful athlete and an overall person. I look forward to her success on the course and in the classroom."
The four-member class completes the 2014-15 roster along with two seniors,
Liliana Cammisa (Alta Gracia, Argentina) and
Daniela Ortiz (Morelia, Mexico), and sophomore
Katrina Wang (Shenzhen, China).
