FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Second baseman
Carlos Asuaje (Fr., Weston, Fla.) became the first Nova Southeastern freshman to receive Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office Monday.
The standout rookie led the Sharks to an SSC series sweep over No. 13 Florida Southern, batting .583 with five runs and four RBI. Batting in the leadoff spot, Asuaje hit safely in each contest, drew five walks and reached based in 71 percent (.706 OBP) of his plate appearances.
The leadoff hitter tallied three hits in both the series opener and finale, belting a pair of doubles in NSU's 15-11 win in game one. In three contests, Asuaje posted a .750 slugging percentage and a .933 fielding mark. He was successful in his lone stolen base attempt.
This is the Sharks’ sixth Player of the Week honor this season, with all six honors going to different players. Asuaje is the only freshman in the conference to receive Player of the Week honors this season. The last freshman to receive the award was Florida Tech’s Dylan Wolchik on April 12, 2010. Florida Southern’s, Zach Maggard, a senior now, was the last freshman position player to receive Player of the Week honors on April 28, 2008.
