MANSFIELD, Texas – With one day remaining and an individual national title claimed, the Nova Southeastern University men’s and women’s swim teams head into the final day of the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships with a full head of steam. The Shark men are currently 10th overall with 148 points, while the NSU women are 11th with 91.5 total points.
"Coming off this morning's peformances, I felt we were in a good position to peform well in tonight's finals," head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron said. "We started off on such a high note with Erin winning the individual title that it got the momentum going for us the remainder of the night."
Coming into the championship finals with the third best prelim time in the women’s 500 frestyle,
Erin Black (Jr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) made waves in the pool tonight by winning the championship final and claiming the individual national title in the event. Qualifying in the morning prelims with a time of 4:55.38, she cut nearly 6 seconds off her championship run finishing with a time of 4:49.86, which was also a personal best time. The win earned her a second First-Team All-America honor this week.
"Going into tonight, our goal for Erin was to stay relaxed and swim her race in under 4:50. She stayed focused throughout the entire race and accomplished those goals and the end result was her winning the individual title. Her accomplishment is simply a testament to her hard work and committment she has demonstrated throughout the entire season," Bonewit-Cron said.
Also swimming the women’s 500 was
Jessica Rocheleau (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) who finished 23rd overall in the women’s 500 freestyle with a time of 5:02.71 setting a personal best time in the event.
On the men’s side,
Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) also qualified for the championship final in the men’s 500 free with a morning prelim time of 4:25.73. In the championship, he swam a personal best time of 4:23.20 and finished second overall as the individual national runner-up in the event. His second-place finish earned him First-Team All-American honors.
Swimming in the consolation finals of the same event,
Florian Mehlan (So., Moers, Germany) finished ninth overall with a personal best time of 4:26.23 cutting nearly five seconds off his morning prelim time.
Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) followed with a 13th-place finish with a time of 4:30.94.
Addison Cates (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) and
Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) swam in the men’s 500 morning prelims finishing 27th and 29th respectively. Cates posted a time of 4:38.13, while Chambers finished at 4:38.71.
Josh Davis (So., Huron, S.D.) made an appearance in the men’s consolation final of the men’s 100 backstroke finishing16th overall with a time of 49.78.
Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.) competed on the women’s side finishing with a time of 59.18 in the morning prelims.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke,
Armin Hornikell (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.) won the consolation final to finish ninth overall with a time of 54.78.
Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland) finished 12th overall in the women’s 100 breast consolations with a time of 1:04.43, while
Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba) swam in the morning prelims and finished with a time of 1:06.65.
Making the consolation finals of the women’s 200 butterfly, NSU’s
Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England) picked up the win cutting nearly a second off her morning prelim time finishing ninth overall with a time of 2:03.53.
Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) qualified as a first alternate in the morning prelims finishing 17th overall with a time of 2:07.11. On the men’s side,
Santiago Pombo (Fr., Bogota, Columbia) finished 19th by matching his personal best time of 1:52.42.
The Sharks concluded the night with solid performances in the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relay. Black, Rocheleau, Bransford and Chapple started it off for NSU in the women’s relay finishing sixth overall with a time of 7:31.46. On the men’s side, Nordstrand, Mehlan, Cates and Grundstrom combined for an eighth-place finish with a time of 6:38.32.
