JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern rowing team won the varsity-4 championship at the First Coast Head Race Saturday. Five boats competed in Jacksonville's annual regatta.
The V4 A boat took the win with a time of 18:48.07. The boat was over 30 seconds faster than any other boat from a rival school. The Sharks went back-to-back at the finish line, with the B boat taking second with a time of 19:03.81.
The NSU V4 A boat was made up of: coxswain
Courtney Berger (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.),
Stephanie Hauck (Sr., Somers Point, N.J.),
Megan O'Donnell (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.),
Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and
Bethany Warlich (Fr., Leeds Point, N.J.).
The B boat held: coxswain
Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.),
Tori Torrisi (So., Saratoga, N.Y.),
Emily Harrington (Sr., Virginia Beach, Fla.),
Adrianna Rosario (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and
Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.).
"This weekend was a great chance for the novices to see what it really means to be a Shark and race hard," said Harrington. "We were able to pull together as a team, which showed in our race results."
In the varsity-8 race, the Sharks took second place overall behind NCAA Division I Jacksonville. The Sharks finished with a time of 18:50.72, 12 seconds off the lead boat. However, they were almost two minutes faster than the top boat from Florida Tech, the only other DII team in the field. NSU's B boat finished third with a time of 19:46.19, defeating the top team from all but one institution.
"Today was a testament to how hard we've been working as a team," stated Berger. "Every single person went out and emptied their tanks in each race they were in. As a coxswain, that is my definition of success. There is this empowering feeling knowing that each person fully committed themselves to the team. It's exciting to see what the next race holds and I cannot wait to grow as a team."
The A boat in the V8 race was comprised of: coxswain Berger, Hauck, Warlich, Page, O'Donnell,
Alexandra Posada (Fr., Tampa, Fla.),
Abbey Schiavo (Sr., Northfield, N.J.),
Falon Irwin (Fr., Galloway, N.J.) and
Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.).
The B boat was made up of:Hudon, Torrisi, Lobaugh, Rosario,
Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.), Harrington,
Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.),
Julianna Jaycox (Fr., Oakdale, N.Y.) and
Caitlin Mooney (Sr., Centerville, Mass.)
The final event of the day, the novice-4, took place just before 3 p.m. The Sharks took third in the race, with a time of 23:15.84. the novice boat was led by coxswain Hudon and was rowed by
Marie Hanft (Sr., Port Orange, Fla.),
Erin Black (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), Irwin and
Ashley Nichols (Fr., Inverness, Fla.).
NSU will race in their final event of the fall, the FIRA Fall Classic, on Nov. 9 in Fellsmere, Fla.
