Tennis Lends Hand to LifeNet4Families Kitchen

Sharks serve food to families in need.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern tennis team took advantage of its offseason by serving the community, assisting with LifeNet4Families on Broward Blvd. in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The Sharks served a full meal to families in need, including meat, sides, bread, coffee and dessert. Head coach Stephen Schram along with Bianca Roberts (Jr., Tampa, Fla.), Kamryn Blackwood (Sr., Farmington, N.M.) and Sabrina Kierberg (So., Berlin, Germany) served food to dozens of hungry families in the community. Graduate assistant Austin Lavallii served pastries and Charlotte Cote (Jr., Montreal, Canada) poured fresh coffee.

LifeNet4Families offers daily, hot, nutritious meals in their community kitchen. While mainly serving Broward's ever-expanding homeless population, the dining room is also the place where hungry families can visit during the summer when no school meals are available. The community kitchen is open to anyone who is in need. Diners line up to await the opening of the center at 9 a.m. On most days, the food distribution is completed by 11 a.m.

The Sharks were volunteering with an organization that serves as a system of care for those in need in Broward County. LifeNet4Families exists to reduce the pain and suffering of individuals and families in poverty by providing necessary food, ancillary services and referrals.

The project was also in conjunction with Stamp Label, a clothing brand started by NSU alumni that donates 10 percent of their profits to feeding South Florida. Their mission is to make a difference in all communities, enrich the life of every individual, and through those efforts inspire others to be positive and incorporate giving into their everyday lives.

The Sharks have formed a strong working relationship with both organizations and plan on volunteering in the kitchen on a regular basis.
