FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and multiple NSU teams and coaches participated in this year's HANDY Thanksgiving food drive.
HANDY's mission is to embrace, educate and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged, productive adults. Founded in 1985, HANDY has met the needs of more than 45,000 Broward County children and youth in foster and relative/non-relative care under protective supervision. HANDY annually serves more than 1,300 at-risk children and youth, between the ages of birth to 23 years. HANDY's programs focus on education, youth development, and economic self-sufficiency.
With a total of 15 NSU teams contributing to the cause, 13 families were fed, which is an all-time high for SAAC and the athletic department.
Krista Colburn (Jr., Meade, Colo.), a softball student-athlete and the SAAC Community Engagement Chair, has dedicated much of her time and effort to make this the largest HANDY Thanksgiving donation ever. From the beginning of September, Colburn's community efforts have helped SAAC raise over 2,500 donated items toward the U.S. troops, Colorado storm victims and less fortunate families. The donated items thus far have surpassed the yearly total from the previous year.
The following teams contributed to HANDY this year: baseball, men's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country and track, cheerleading, men's and women's swimming, men's soccer, tennis, softball and rowing.
