FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Martinsville HS guard and Nova Southeastern basketball signee Troy Spears recently earned the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway Player of the Week award, honoring the top player in Indiana for the week ending Feb. 8.
The 6-3 Spears averaged 23.5 points, two rebounds and three assists in claiming boys' District 3 honors while helping Martinsville (11-4) to a pair of victories. But as much as his offense shined, where he scored 19 points in one game and 28 in a second, Spears' defense was crucial, as his team posted a 60-48 victory over rival Mooresville and a 77-73 decision over Park Tudor. He was assigned to the Pioneers' Jacob Johnson and the Panthers' Trevon Bluiett and kept both under their averages, as the Artesians went 2-0 for the week.
Spears, ranked 12th among high school prospects in the state of Indiana by ESPN, signed with NSU in November and will join the team as a true freshman in the fall of 2014.
