HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – The No. 1 Nova Southeastern rowing team came out on top in the first of multiple meetings between the Sharks and No. 2 Barry Saturday at Holland Park.
NSU raced the Bucs on its home course and had the support of a large crowd of Sharks supporters who were at the park before sunrise. The fans watched the results they had hoped for, with NSU taking the varsity-8 and varsity-4 races.
The morning began with the V4 event, in which the Sharks won by their largest margin. The Sharks finished in a time of 8:06.7, 38.78 seconds faster than the nation's second-ranked team.
The V4 boat was made up of: coxswain
Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.),
Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.),
Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.),
Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.) and
Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.).
"(The day) started off really well, we were really focused while we were warming up," said Obringer. "We knew we were strong going into this, it was just a matter of putting it all together and I think we did. We performed and we are really happy with the results today."
The V8 boat followed up with another strong performance. The Sharks pulled ahead of the Bucs with a time of 6:59.7, giving them a 7.97 second lead on their South Florida rivals.

Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.).
"For the varsity-8, we really wanted to focus on not being overly nervous but to find that happy medium, be focused, know what we wanted to do together and focus in on our boat only," said Hauck. "We wanted to just power through the race like we know how to do. Normally we are used to doing longer pieces, multiple 2K's. So today, everyone on the team wanted to go out and leave it all out there for those seven or eight minutes. I think we did a really good job today."
The Sharks and Bucs are not scheduled to meet again until the Sunshine State Conference Championship, held in Sarasota, Fla. on April 25.
"Going into this we knew Barry was going to be really fast and really strong, they are the biggest competitor in our region," said Obringer. "They are always pushing us," emphasized Hauck.
NSU will return to action next weekend at the FIRA Championship in Sarasota, Fla. on April 4.
