FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern softball's
Erika Garcia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), baseball's
Mitchel Buerosse (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and the rowing varsity-4 each earned Sunshine State Conference weekly honors for their respective sports.
Garcia earned the SSC Player of the Week award after she led the Sharks to a 6-0 week with series sweeps over conference foes Barry and Lynn. The senior finished the week hitting .444 (8-of-18) and slugging .833 with two home runs and a double. Against Barry, Garcia earned two wins on the mound in game one and game three while also helping herself at the plate with two hits, an RBI and earning two walks. Against Lynn, she earned the win from the mound in game one, while also going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, RBI and two runs scored in a 9-0 win. In game three against Lynn, Garcia hit home runs in back-to-back at bats.
Buerosse earned SSC Pitcher of the Week after he pitched seven perfect innings for the No. 13 Sharks against Palm Beach Atlantic. In the final game of the series, which lasted two days due to inclement weather, Buerosse got the nod at the top of the second inning to resume the game on the second day. The senior pitched six perfect innings (18 up, 18 down) with nine strikeouts on just 61 pitches in a 15-0 win. Buerosse combined with Dillon Frye, who pitched a perfect first inning before the game was postponed, for a perfect game. Buerosse also pitched a three-up, three-down relief inning in game one in a 20-5 win for the Sharks.
In rowing, the nation's top two teams, No. 1 Nova Southeastern and No. 2 Barry, met over the weekend where the Sharks won both the varsity-8 and V4 events. However, the Sharks' V4 had the more dominant victory, defeating the Buccaneers boat by over 38 seconds. NSU finished in a time of 8:06.7, while Barry crossed the finish line in a time of 8:45.48. Combining for the win were: coxswain
Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.),
Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.),
Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.),
Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.) and
