Hagopian Named PBC Women’s Coach of the Year in Busy Second Day of PBC Championship

Brittaney Smash and Derrick Wood named to PBC Sportsmanship Team.

ROME, Ga. The Nova Southeastern track and field teams head into the final day of the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Championship after a busy Friday at Barron Stadium. The Sharks earned several honors Friday, including head coach Bryan Hagopian earning the PBC Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year award.
 
Aside from Hagopian, seniors Brittaney Smash (Arlington, Texas) and Derrick Wood (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) each were named to the PBC Track and Field Sportsmanship Team. In the competition, the women currently sit in first place with 82.5 points. The men head into the final day after moving up to third place with 49 points.
 
NSU's most successful event of the day on both the men's and women's sides came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The women dominated the field, taking places one through four. Peri Bowman (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) won with a time of 11:17 flat, more than a 16 second lead on the competition. Following in places 2-4 were Rose Howel (So., St. Louis, Mo.), Alexandria Palm (Sr., Winnebago, Ill.) and Katey CoDyre (So., Bowmanville, Canada).
 
The Sharks earned another win in the men's steeplechase. Freshman Wade White (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) won with a time of 9:27.87. Luis Gonzalez (Jr., Hereford, Ariz.) also scored in fifth with a time of 9:49.20.
 
The Sharks completed both the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. In the women's event, Brittany Todaro (Jr., Plantation, Fla.) claimed sixth place overall while Brandi Nichols (Jr., Inverness, Fla.) claimed eighth. In the men's, Ryan Jeothe (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) claimed third while Ian Towne (Sr., Freeport, Fla.) took sixth.
 
In the field, Wood went from receiving honors in sportsmanship to scoring in the high jump. He placed seventh with a mark of 1.83m. Amanda Krenitsky (So., Lake Arial, Pa.) placed second in the event with a mark of 1.57m. The Sharks scored three times in the men's discus throw. Darren Hendricks (So., North Port, Fla.) finished the highest in third place with a mark of 42.17m. Behind him in fifth and sixth were seniors Ben Futerman (Freehold, N.J.) and Kevin Blanden (Lake Mary, Fla.). In the women's throw, Jessica Nyiro (So., Valparaiso, Ind.) scored and placed eighth with a mark of 33.86m.
 
NSU was successful in the only relay event of the day, the 4x100m relay. The women, represented by Ciona Williams (So., Stockton, Calif.), Monica Sapp (So., Miami), Quannisha Allen (So., St. Augustine, Fla.) and Shannon Rolle (Fr., Miami), claimed third with a time of 47.55. The men, represented by Davontae Carson (Jr., Seattle, Wash.), Talyn Washington (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), Kiel Knight (Sr., Plantation, Fla.) and Dwayne Edwards (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.), claimed fourth with a time of 42.37.
 
In the preliminary events, Williams qualified in the final of the 200m dash. She placed a close second with a time of 24.84. On the men's side, Washington and Carson qualified with times of 21.11 and 21.25, respectively. Both are NCAA B qualifying times. In the women's 100m hurdles, Angela Kuhar (Jr., Erie, Pa.) qualified for the finals with a time of 16.46. Wood, competing in his first collegiate season in the 110m hurles, qualified with a time of 16.58.
