No. 1 Rowing Wins Sixth Sunshine State Conference Championship

Sharks reclaim their spot at the top of the SSC.

SARASOTA, Fla. The No. 1 Nova Southeastern rowing team won its sixth Sunshine State Conference Championship Friday, sweeping the field by winning the varsity-8 and varsity-4 races.

The V8 boat won its race with a time of 6:53.4. They were 10.3 seconds ahead of second-place Barry and 26.7 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

The V8 boat was comprised of: coxswain Courtney Berger (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.), Tori Torrisi (So., Saratoga, N.Y.), Bethany Warlich (Fr., Leeds Point, N.J.), Stephanie Hauck (Sr., Somers Point, N.J.), Megan O'Donnell (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.), Adrianna Rosario (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Emily Harrington (Sr., Virginia Beach, Fla.), Amanda Craig (Jr., Berlin, N.J.) and Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.).

After the event, Berger, Hauck, O'Donnell and Torrisi were all named to the All-SSC team. Warlich was named to the All-Freshman/Novice Team

"I'm honored to be on a team that is so dedicated to each other and the goal we all set forth," said Berger. "I am glad to wake up every morning to work hard with this group of girls and days like today prove why we do this. Today was a great day of successes and we are excited to race in Philadelphia. The road is becoming a narrow one and we have to keep trucking on the right path. Winning conference for the third time really is a great feeling and is a great way to race the last time, collegiately, in my home town and on my home course. There is no better feeling leaving Sarasota a champion."

NSU sealed the title with a win in the V 4 event. The Sharks finished with a time of 7:31.6, which bested Florida Tech's second-place boat by over 14 seconds. The rest of the field was at least 20.6 seconds behind the Sharks.

The V4 boat was made up of: coxswain Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.), Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.), Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.), Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.) and Remi McClellan (Jr., Mullica, N.J.).

"The team put together two great weekends of championship races with SIRAs last week and then today at conference," said assistant coach Samantha Sarff. "They have been working incredibly hard in practice and it was awesome to see them achieve one of their goals for the season in a conference championship. We were up against some great teams today and each boat executed their race plans effectively. We have a little over a week to prepare for Dad Vails and are looking forward to finding more speed. We will be facing strong competition from the west coast and the team is excited to see the match ups."

The Sharks also won an exhibition-4 race Friday morning. They clocked in with a time of 7:49.9, defeating the field by over 33 seconds for the widest margin of victory on the day.

The Sharks were made up of: coxswain Sarah Erickson (Jr., Sunrise, Fla.), Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.),  Camille Evans (Jr., Orlando, Fla.), Falon Irwin (Fr., Galloway, N.J.) and Payton Van Horn (So., Jackson, Miss.).

With its sixth SSC title, the rowing team now leads all teams on campus in SSC Championships. NSU won its first SSC title in 2007, beginning a run of six out of eight championships won.

NSU will now move on to the prestigious Aberdeen Dad Vails in Philadelphia on May 9.
