SARASOTA, Fla. – The No. 1 Nova Southeastern rowing team had a successful day at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championship Saturday, taking the varsity-8 title.
The Sharks' eight boat won a close race with a time of 6:50.5. NSU was 1.6 seconds faster than NCAA Division I Jacksonville and over 20 seconds faster than any DII team.
The eight boat was comprised of: coxswain
Courtney Berger (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.),
Stephanie Hauck (Sr., Somers Point, N.J.), Bethany Warlich (Fr., Leeds Point, N.J.),
Adrianna Rosario (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Kristen Page (Fr., San Diego, Calif.)
, Megan O'Donnell (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.),
Emily Harrington (Sr., Virginia Beach, Fla.),
Remi McClellan (Jr., Mullica, N.J.) and
Kelly Scott (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.).
"We had a hard day of racing today but we walked away with a wealth of knowledge," stated Berger. "We're becoming more comfortable with the lineups and challenges we have been taking on. The road is long but we are hungry for success."
Next, in the junior varsity-8 race, the Sharks would take second place to Jacksonville. NSU crossed the finish line in 7:17.5, 4.4 seconds out of first place but 23.8 seconds faster than third-place Florida Tech.
The JV8 boat was made up of:
Amanda Hudon (So., Sebastian, Fla.),
Daesha Roberts (Fr., Yulee, Fla.),
Cassily Lobaugh (Fr., Milton, Ga.),
Caitlin Mooney (Sr., Centerville, Mass.),
Kelsey Obringer (Jr., Port Republic, N.J.),
Falon Irwin (Fr., Galloway, N.J.),
Maya Horsford (Fr., Chesterfield, Mo.),
Julianna Jaycox (Fr., Oakdale, N.Y.) and
Camille Evans (Jr., Orlando, Fla.).
In the pair, NSU's Evans and
Amanda Craig (Berlin, N.J.) took second place with a time of 8:26.8. The Sharks were 24.6 seconds behind Tampa but five seconds ahead of DI Stetson.
In the JV-4 race, NSU returned to the lead with a winning-time of 07:41.1. It was a close race, as NSU defeated Florida Tech by 4.1 seconds and Tampa by 14.3 seconds. The boat was represented by: coxswain Hudon, Lobaugh, Roberts, Obringer and Mooney.
NSU raced in a varsity-4 'B' race and took another victory. The Sharks finished in a time of 07:36.2, over 11 seconds faster than the field. That boat was filled with: coxswain
Sarah Erickson (Jr., Sunrise, Fla.), Page, Warlich, McClellan and Harrington.
Ending the day was the varisty-4 event. NSU took second in the closest finish of the day. The Sharks finished in 07:26.2, four tenths of a second behind Jacksonville, the team that went on to win the points title. The varsity-4 race was comprised of: coxswain Berger, O'Donnell, Rosario, Scott and Hauck.
The Sharks will return to the water in two weeks at the SIRA Championship in Oakridge, Tenn. on April 19.
