FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #NSU50 "Top Moments in NSU Athletics History" continues with the 35th moment on the list:
Mike Mominey assumes full-time role as Nova Southeastern University Director of Athletics.
May 10, 2010
At the end of the 2009-10 athletic year, NSU was in a period of rapid growth and success. By May 10, 2010, women's golf was getting set to successfully defend its NCAA Division II National Championship, while men's golf and softball were each in the midst of NCAA postseason runs. Nevertheless, the Sharks were still aiming for higher ground, leading Mominey to make the decision to focus solely on his role as Director of Athletics.
"This is a positive decision for everyone involved - my family, the department and the university." Mominey said at the time of the announcement. "We are fortunate to have an administration and a Board of Trustees that are committed to supporting, building and expanding the intercollegiate athletic programs. I look forward to working toward this effort during this exciting time for the university."
"Mike has done a tremendous job in building our athletic department," Chancellor Ray Ferrero, Jr. said in 2010. "His success has made all of us proud. However, this very success has created the need for Mike to focus his attention fully on the oversight of athletics."
Mominey's transition forced the NSU baseball program in a new direction after a decade of consistent success. During his 10 years as the head baseball coach at NSU, Mominey guided the Sharks to a 302-226 overall record. Since joining the NCAA in the 2003 season, his record was an impressive 261-164, which ranked him 30th in all-time winning percentage in NCAA Division II at the time of his transition (.614 winning percentage).
Mominey recorded six consecutive seasons with 30 or more wins and seven 30-plus win seasons overall. Throughout his tenure, he coached seven All-Americans and had 21 players drafted or signed to play in the professional ranks. That includes current MLB talent J.D. Martinez (Detroit Tigers), Mike Fiers (Milwaukee Brewers) and Miles Mikolas (Texas Rangers).
"The establishment and the building of a nationally-recognized baseball program at the NCAA level is certainly a great accomplishment," Mominey said. "The success goes beyond the field and is really a credit to the student-athletes who have played in this program and the assistant coaches who have worked tirelessly throughout the years to make the program what it is today. Knowing that this process, the accomplishments and the baseball program are viewed as a success is personally gratifying."
One of Mominey's first decisions in his sole administrative role was bringing in
Greg Brown to take over as head coach of the baseball team. That decision has paid dividends, as the baseball team has made two trips to the NCAA postseason and has won a total of 129 games in four seasons.
The entire athletic program has also flourished since this transition. In Mominey's last season as a coach and administrator, NSU finished 66
th in Division II in the Learfield Director's Cup, a measurement of the overall athletic success of the university. NSU has finished in the top 30 in every season since, highlighted by a ninth-place finish in 2012-13.
