BRADENTON, Fla. – Luicelena Perez remained undefeated in singles, yet the Nova Southeastern University women's tennis team fell to Rollins in the Sunshine State Conference Quarterfinals, 5-3, at the IMG Tennis Courts in Bradenton, Florida on Thursday.
"It was a tough one today," said head coach Doug Neagle. "We fought hard but Rollins got the best of us. LP (Perez) continues to dominate in singles and doubles. It was a hard-fought battle all year with this young team and I am proud of our girls for grinding it out until the end."
Rollins held a 2-1 advantage going into singles after taking two of the three doubles matches. Perez and Isabella Lowrey earned the win in the top-flight over Alexandra Borg and Fabiana Vitanza, 8-6, to avoid the sweep. The No. 1 duo has now won six straight doubles matches.
The Sharks tied the match 2-2 after Simone Pratt defeated Shannon Etten, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The Tars would respond, though, with a win at No. 4 before Perez evened things back up at 3-3 after a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Vitanza at No. 1. Rollins would regain the lead following a win at No. 6 and would eventually secure a trip to the semifinals with a win at No. 3.
The Sharks will now wait until the selection show on Sunday, April 23 to see if they are able to clinch a spot in the regional tournament.
